NO SLEEP 'TIL SUDBURY

NO SLEEP 'TIL SUDBURY Reviews & Testimonials

"Any music fan who was around in the pre-Internet era will relate to Jensen's anecdotes about digging through record store bins in search of the latest new releases and faithfully reading magazines to find out about up-and-coming bands. A passionate, informed take on a distinctive genre."
         - Kirkus Reviews

“If you’re into books like Fargo Rock City by Chuck Klosterman, you should get a kick out of Jensen’s book about what it was like growing up with 80s metal….”
         - Alan Cross, radio broadcaster and music journalist

“A must-read, and not only for metalheads. As long-time host of radio's Metalshop during heavy metal’s heyday, all I can say is that this book nails it. Not only my favorite on the musical genre, but a really fun read as it's personalized in a smart, witty way. Reminds me of Chuck Klosterman’s book, and just as good if not better. And Jensen’s encyclopedic knowledge of metal, and bringing up so many obscure bands that I'd forgotten about, I can safely say that Eddie Trunk and I have met our match.
Nice job Brent....”
         - Ian O'Malley, Air Personality Q104.3 FM, New York City

"Bold, honest, and entertaining. Jensen is a true wordsmith and a master storyteller. He's passionate and articulate and he tells his story with candor and wit, coming off as knowledgeable and quite likeable. I came for the music, but I stayed for the story."
        - Christopher Long, Ink19 music critic and author of C'MON! and A Shot of Poison

"Jensen's writing style is straightforward, and he doesn't pull any punches. No Sleep 'Til Sudbury is part memoir, part music history, part music criticism and completely entertaining."
        - Chad Bowar, About.com

"The story of a man trying to reassess his life via his record collection. An entertaining and chucklesome read."
        - Dave Ling, Classic Rock magazine

“Huge book recommend: Brent Jensen's No Sleep 'Til Sudbury, in which the dude recounts his life growing up as a metal fan in small town Ontario in the early '80s. Man, for any fairly serious to serious fan who wants to hear smart analyses of these bands and albums, mixed with drinking stories and small town goofs, it's perfect. Like Chuck Klosterman. I can't put it down...”
        - Martin Popoff, music journalist and critic

"One of the best books I have read on Heavy Metal, but also really a great coming of age tale as well - it reminded me of Almost Famous in its narrative style and its ability to be irreverent..."
        - Jack Starr, Burning Starr / ex-Virgin Steele

"The bands Jensen loves, I don't. The bands I love, he doesn't. But that's why I enjoyed reading No Sleep 'Til Sudbury so much. It made me think."
         - Metal-Rules.net

"This is one of those books that you'll come back to time and time again, mention to friends, and quote when you least expect it"
         - Loud-Stuff.com

“I can't remember the last time I laughed out loud reading a book. This book had me in stitches at moments and then minutes later, deeply lost in nostalgia and examining the impact of music on my own life. At first I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Was it an autobiography? Was it an academic dissertation on metal? A comedic rock journalist writing an autobiography? This is
not a simple book to classify and unlike anything else I have ever read. Perhaps if Nick Hornby's High Fidelity were focused around metal or if Cameron Crowe had been from Espanola, they would have written something along these lines...

“I'm not much of a metal fan, but this book went far beyond just the music. The personal stories felt more like we were sitting down over a drink, and the author was sharing his experiences, instead of feeling like I was flipping through pages. When you can take someone "out of the book" to a place where they feel like they're a part of the story, you've accomplished something."

"I found myself nodding and smiling at many of the parts I read. This is a finely written book..."

"This book should come with its own soundtrack!!! I found that I was continually bookmarking my page so I could pull up the songs Brent talked about so I could relive how I felt listening to them. It totally brought me back to my childhood. I agree that you don't have to be a "metalhead" to enjoy this book. Well written with a great layout. A definite must for everyone's bookshelf!”
